The sky appears blue because sunlight has many colors, and blue light has the shortest wavelength. When sunlight hits the atmosphere, blue light scatters in all directions by air molecules. That is why we see a blue sky during the day.
For example, if you shine white light through a prism, you see different colors, and blue scatters the most.
